The Light that is Read, the Poetry that is Seen

Sebastião da Gama’s visual heritage in Plastic Arts and Photography

Sebastião da Gama’s work is still alive because it did not age as passive contemplation.

It is an appeal to creation.

Painting or photographing from his verses is not illustrating poems – it is continuing the conversation he started with the mountain, with the sea and with the wind. The Serra da Arrábida was not just a landscape for Sebastião da Gama, but an extension of his own soul, a sacred temple and a shelter port.

Whenever you are looking at Arrábida scenery, each of your senses contributes to your being : the rustle of the leaves, the smell of the air after the rain, the taste of the salty breeze near the sea, the caress of the wind on your cheek …

Because earth textures, and deep roots are parts of local landscape. and appeal to other senses than just your eyes…
